A 17-year-old boy from Ganjoni, Mombasa County, who disappeared from home ten days ago after losing his mother’s Ksh20, 000 in a sports bet, has been found.
Awadh Omar returned home on Sunday after spending nearly two weeks on the shores of Indian Ocean in Ukunda, Kwale County. He sought his mother’s forgiveness after life on the shores of the ocean became unbearable.
“I used to eat bush nuts and sleep in boats,” said Omar.
Muslims for Human Rights (Muhuri) Chairman Khelef Khalifa faulted a section of gambling sites for greed, saying they should come up with strict user agreement, which locks out minors from betting.
“Why should children below the age of 18 be allowed to place bets on online gambling sites? The people behind these sites should develop strict policies that lock out children from betting. They shouldn’t just be concerned about the money they’re making from the business. Why should they make money from a 17-year-old?” posed Mr Khalifa.
Sophia Mohamed, Omar’s mother, says she has since forgiven her son.
“I was going through emotional trauma and worries. I was not eating or sleeping. I looked for my son everywhere. I am glad I have found him,” said Ms Mohamed.
