A 25-year-old man from Gem Sub-County in Siaya is nursing his injuries at the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital in Kisumu after he was attacked by another man for giving wrong predictions in a football bet.

Jacob Owino, who was christened the “betting expert” by Luanda Minyoho village residents – due to his many correct predictions in the far and recent past –, was clobbered and seriously hacked by Leonard Omenya, 40, after he received “wrong predictions” from Owino.

Owino had convinced Omenya to place a Ksh8, 100 football bet, assuring Omenya that he “was going to win Ksh49, 000”.

But, after all the games, which he had placed his bets on had ended, Omenya realised he had lost his Ksh8, 100.

Angered, Omenya grabbed a whip and a panga and made his way to Owino’s home, where he found Owino seated.

He descended on him with kicks and blows, before whipping and hacking him several times.

Area chief Barrack Oloo said it was Omenya who approached Owino and asked the “betting expert” to help him place a bet, just a week after Owino had helped his neighbour win Ksh1.5 million by giving him the correct predictions.

After attacking and injuring his victim, Omenya frog-marched Owino, who was bleeding profusely at the time, to the chief’s office in Nyawara.

The chief instructed that the victim be rushed to Yala Sub-County Hospital.

After receiving emergency treatment at the health facility, Owino was transferred to the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital for advanced medical attention.

Oloo says Omenya has been arrested, and is being held at Yala Police Station as investigations into the incident continue.
