Tanzanian billionaire Mohammed Dewji was kidnapped outside a gym by unknown armed men in Dar es Salaam early Thursday.
The 43-year-old tycoon was reportedly abducted by two white men and an unknown number of armed accomplices who had waylaid him at the Colosseum Hotel and Fitness Club.
The kidnappers, who were in two vehicles, had reportedly arrived before Mr. Dewji and parked at the hotel.
After the businessman arrived and parked his vehicle, two of the kidnappers are said to have walked towards him and pulled him into their vehicle before speeding off.
Unconfirmed reports later indicated that police had rescued him and arrested several suspects in connection to the incident.
Dar es Salaam regional commissioner Paul Makonda would later come out to claim he had been misquoted after reports alleged that he had confirmed Dewji’s rescue.
His black Range Rover was seen parked outside the gym even as police sealed off the area.
