Top Tanzanian actress Wema Sepetu has lost thousands of shillings in ad revenues after her official Instagram account, which has over 3.3 million followers, was hacked last week.
The hackers have since posted tens of adverts – valued collectively at over Ksh250, 000 –, on the social networking site, depriving Ms Sepetu of the proceeds, which ordinarily would have gone to her.
It is alleged the hackers also managed to illegally possess the business contact Wema had displayed on her profile, and were using the cell phone line to receive money from firms, which had advertised on Ms Sepetu’s social media network.
Wema Sepetu allegedly charges between Ksh2, 500 to Ksh5, 000 for a single advert placed on the networking site for a maximum of 3 hours a day.
The hackers allegedly make over Ksh35, 000 in a day.
“Clients often communicate via social media to the personalities, who they’d want to use their social media accounts for advertisement. Rarely do they suspect that they’re being conned, given the platform of communication is via Direct Message,” an online marketer says.
Wema Sepetu was not available for comment.
Wema Sepetu’s manager, Neema Ndepanya, says she suspects that the actress’ fashion designer, Martin Kadinda, and social media manager, Bestizo, are behind the hacking.
“We’re following up on the issue, and have tasked Kadinda and Bestizo to explain what happened till Ms Sepetu’s Instagram account was hacked. We’ve also involved the police in this,” said Ms Ndepanya.
Tanzanian communications authority has advised Wema to file a report with Instagram managers in the country and involve the police so that it (communications authority) can take up the issue.
