Babu Tale, the manager of top Tanzanian musician Diamond Platnumz, is being held in custody for failing to pay TSh250 million (KSh11.1 million), which he owes a Muslim cleric in a copyright infringement case, Tanzania’s Global Publishers reports.
On February 18 2016, a Dar es Salaam court found Babu Tale, whose real name is Hamis Taletale, guilty of illegally using Sheikh Hashim Mbonde’s teachings.
Mr Tale used the creative work for commercial gains without seeking permission from Sheikh Mbonde. That move saw Mr Tale infringing the cleric’s intellectual property rights. The incident happened in 2013.
The court, consequently, asked Babu Tale to pay Sheikh Mbonde KSh11.1 million in damages.
Babu Tale was yet to pay the damages as at the time of his arrest last weekend.
He was, as at the time of going to press Wednesday, being held at the Central police post in Dar es Salaam.
Babu Tale is expected to be arraigned in court later May 23.
