Former President’s daughter shot dead, another killed by lightning strike

Valentina Guebuza, the daughter to former Mozambique President Armando Guebuza has died, police in Mozambique have confirmed.

The police will issue an official statement on the death of Valentina later Thursday, says Club of Mozambique.

The Mozambican businesswoman died aged 36 in Maputo. According to police, she was shot by her husband and died before reaching hospital.

Valentina Guebuza was elected to the Frelimo Central Committee during the 10th party congress in Pemba in 2012.

She was a civil engineer with a degree from neighbouring South Africa, where, in the last year of her course, she started consulting for a company.

Valentina occupied prominent positions in the telecommunications and banking sectors and led her family investment holding company, Focus 21, Gestão e Desenvolvimento, Lda, which has interests in the fisheries, transportation, mining and real estate sectors also.

Focus 21 has significant participation in operations at the Port of Beira Terminal and the subscription TV Company StarTimes.

Valentina was chairman of the board of directors of StarTimes Media, a joint venture between China’s StarTimes and Focus 21 in charge of digital migration in the country.

On 26 July 2014, Valentina married Zófimo Muiuane, head of the marketing department of telecommunications operator Mcel, at a religious ceremony at the Chamanculo Presbyterian Church in Maputo. She leaves a daughter.

Valentina was on Forbes’ 2013 list of the 20 most powerful young women in Africa. In a ranking led by Isabel dos Santos, daughter of the Angolan president, Valentina appeared in 7th place.

Daughter to former Malawi President strike by lightning

In yet another sad incident, the first born daughter to former Malawi President Elson Bakili Muluzi, Esme Muluzi-Malisita was on Monday killed by lightning while at her farm at Mpemba in Blantyre, a relation Dr Ishamel Chioko confirmed, as reported by Nyasa Times.

Muluzi-Malisita died when lightning struck her and a friend Hazel Busile while the two were helping out in fertiliser application at a garden in Mpemba.

She was rushed to Mwaiwathu Private Hospital where she was pronounced dead.

The former president is reportedly devastated with the death of his first born child who was also sister to Minister of Lands Housing and Urban Development Atupele Muluzi.

Chioko said the family are “heartbroken”.

Born on August 31 1969 Muluzi-Malisita is survived by a husband Dr Ken Malisita and children.
