The National Prayer Breakfast held at the Safari Park Hotel in Nairobi on Thursday, May 31 brought together Kenya’s top political echelons led by President Uhuru Kenyatta, Opposition chief Raila Odinga, Deputy President William Ruto and Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka.
The four, who shared a stage upon President Kenyatta’s invitation, called for unity among Kenyans; and even extended an olive branch to each other.
“I am sorry [for any wrongs I have committed against you]. I hereby tender my apology,” President Kenyatta told Mr Odinga amid applause from the pleased audience.
Mr Odinga, on the other hand, made light of their previous political exchanges with President Kenyatta, saying the Head of State had, at one time, referred to him as “mad”.
“I forgive you, even as I tender my apology to you [for wrongs I committed against you],” Mr Odinga told President Kenyatta.
The same script was followed by DP Ruto, who tendered his apology to Mr Kalonzo; the vice versa happened.
A conciliatory mood dominated the prayer breakfast, with the Top Four politicians engaging in moments of handshakes, hugs and laughter – all to the approval of the audience and Kenyans, who were following the televised proceedings.
